A vessel to carry beer

Remember me mentioning that I'd seen text similar to "Our casks are vessels to carry beer, not measures, but care is taken that they contain not less than their reputed quantities" on bottle labels? Here's proof that I wasn't just making it up.

The text is basically identical, save for the changes necessary to apply it to a different type of container:

"This bottle is a vessel to carry beer, not a measure, but care is taken that it contains not less than the reputed quantity."

That's it. I had a small point to make and I've made it.

I prefer to state it this way:

"Craig is a vessel to carry beer, not a measure, but care is taken that he contains not less than the reputed quantity."

It occurs to me that would be a great title for a blog on our favourite subject, "A Vessel To Carry Beer"...

Well reputed is not necessarily a standard measure either see http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/5845043
